Immune deficiencies

Our focus
In the Region of Southern Denmark, the Infectious Diseases Department is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of primary immunodeficiencies (PID) in adults, as well as some secondary immunodeficiencies (SID), including HIV.

While HIV has been an established research area at the department for many years, in recent years we have built up a research area focused on PID and have upcoming research projects related to SID and associated infections in the pipeline.

Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID), with an incidence of 1 in 26,000, is the most common symptomatic PID in adults and is the primary PID we follow in the infectious diseases outpatient clinic.

For most patients, CVID leads to an increased risk of infections – primarily respiratory infections. In addition to infections, however, CVID is also associated with a broad and diverse clinical picture, including an increased risk of diseases where the immune system attacks the body (autoimmune diseases) as well as cancer. Therefore, there is often a need for a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of these patients.
