As a science discipline it covers a diverse range of topics including, for example, the demography of blood donors, safety of blood donation, the manufacture and storage of blood components, the use and development of blood establishment IT, patient blood management, and the optimum use, the effects and complications of transfusion of blood products. On the laboratory side, transfusion medicine deals with the science of blood group serology, blood group genetics and the red cell and platelet immunology of pregnancy, fetus and the newborn.
In KIA we have an established group engaged in research in some of the many aspects of transfusion medicine. The group works in close collaboration with KIAs adjunct professor, Mark Harris Yazer from the University of Pittsburgh. Over the years, the group has collaborated with research groups in other countries, such as New York Blood Center and the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory in Bristol.
