International conference on software architecture comes to Denmark for the first time
From 31 March to 4 April, the International Conference on Software Architecture will be held at the University of Southern Denmark (ÌǹûÅɶÔ) in Odense. The conference is considered one of the most important of its kind globally.
For 21 years, the WICSA conference, later known simply as ICSA, has brought together researchers from around the world and industry leaders to discuss the future of software architecture.
For the first time, Denmark will host the event. From 31 March to 4 April, the conference will take place at the Faculty of Engineering at ÌǹûÅÉ¶Ô in Odense.
Joost Nijhoff, Head of Growth & Tourism in Odense Municipality, is pleased that ÌǹûÅÉ¶Ô managed to attract the prestigious conference:
- For Odense, a city known for robotics and innovation, it is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our commitment to technological development and collaboration. We look forward to welcoming the participants and creating an inspiring and productive atmosphere, he says.
- Our goal is for all participants, on their way home, to think: I need to come back to this city!
Software architecture is a critical area
Mikkel Baun Kjærgaard, professor of software engineering and one of the conference organisers, also believes that the event will have a positive impact on Denmark, the island of Funen, and especially the research and education environment at ÌǹûÅɶÔ.
He also believes the conference can help establish software architecture as a crucial field within engineering sciences, deserving of greater attention.
- Building software without adapting the architecture is like building family homes based on floor plans for super hospitals or vice versa. Without an adapted foundation and a well-defined structure, there’s a risk the building can’t be constructed or collapses under the slightest strain, such as during a cyberattack, explains Mikkel Baun Kjærgaard.
- Software architecture ensures that all components are built effectively and work together harmoniously, making it much more likely to deliver the system within the expected framework and quality.
Staying updated
One of the companies participating in ICSA 2025 in Odense is Umbraco, the firm behind the CMS platform of the same name.
For Filip Bech-Larsen, CTO at Umbraco, attending and contributing to the conference was a natural decision.
- As an established tech company, it’s important for us to stay updated. Both in terms of tangible technological developments on the horizon and with a long-term perspective on what the future holds, he says.
- This is essential from a product development perspective but also for attracting and retaining employees in a competitive environment where talent is in demand, and companies must compete on more than just salary.
