Narrative Medicine is part of the “Mennesker først” course which consists of three supporting courses and two subsequent phases. (More information – in Danish only – .)
The aim of the Narrative Medicine course is to improve students’ awareness of the individual story of illness in order to strengthen the relationship between doctors, patients and relatives. Students are encouraged to reflect about the individual patient's life context and his or her search for meaning, and to develop an inclusive and reflective view of themselves and their role as future doctors. Based on relevant literature, fundamental aspects of communication and professional identity are discussed from a humanistic perspective, including topics such as ambivalence, ambiguity, empathy, detail, uncertainty, diversity, difference and vulnerability.
Spring and fall, 18 hours per semester, mandatory
Course coordinators: Anita Wohlmann & Cindie A. Aaen Maagaard.
